“Neither a borrower, nor a lender be”; but what would Shakespeare have made of credit cards? It seems futile to avoid them these days, when every purchase and every bank account come with this seductive option. That is, until the day you find yourself unexpectedly saddled with overdraft fees, having missed that one line of legal print.
This is where netspend.com comes in. It’s an outrageously simple concept: a prepaid Visa debit card.
It works like a bank-issued debit card, only this time around you only get to spend what you have put in. No finance charges, no debt, no minimum balance, no credit check, no surprises. The card itself is free: give them an address, date of birth, and ID and it comes in the post, no obligations and 100% approval. After loading the card for free online, or at one of their 90,000 Reload Centers (including Moneygram and Western Union), two fee plans are available: either a pay-as-you-go system, which charges a dollar or two for PIN and signature transactions, respectively, or a monthly $9.95 Fee Advantage plan which covers these charges. Activating the card itself costs $9.95. Just make sure you use it every 90 days to avoid the Account Maintenance; but if you’re like over half of netspend.com customers, this won’t be an issue because you’ll be paying your bills online now.
In case you are still sitting on the bench, let me try a 5% APY savings rate. While it’s listed as a Promotional rate, when you combine it with the free direct deposit offers, there’s no reason not to give it a try. There is one thing you can’t fault netspend.com: everything is written in black and white on their website. The perks are there, the charges are there, and everything you need to know would fit on the back of an envelope. And that, in itself, says a lot.
